Hotels and Accommodations
Hotels must allow service dogs under the ADA. No pet fees may be charged. When booking, notify the hotel in advance that you will be accompanied by a service dog. Request a ground-floor room for easier outdoor access. If any staff member questions your dog, remain calm and state that your dog is a service dog required due to a disability.
Rideshare — Uber and Lyft
Both Uber and Lyft have policies that require drivers to transport service dogs under the ADA. Drivers cannot decline a ride solely because of a service dog. If a driver cancels after seeing your dog, you can report the incident through the app — both platforms take service dog refusals seriously and may deactivate drivers who refuse.
Public Transit
Public transit systems — buses, subways, trains, and ferries — must allow service dogs under the ADA. Your dog may ride with you at no additional cost. The dog should be kept under control and positioned so it does not block the aisle or other passengers.
Amtrak and Rail Travel
Amtrak allows service dogs on all trains with no size restriction and no additional fee. Advance notice is recommended but not required. Your dog may rest on the floor in your seating area.
Road Trips
When traveling by car, service dog rights apply at all public accommodations along the route — gas stations, rest stops, restaurants, and hotels. Plan pet-relief breaks and ensure your dog has water and a comfortable space in the vehicle.
International Travel Considerations
Service dog access rights vary significantly outside the United States. Research the specific laws of each destination country in advance. Many countries have their own requirements for documentation, health certificates, and quarantine that apply to all dogs including service dogs.
