As a service dog handler, you are an ambassador for the entire service dog community. How you present yourself affects how the next handler will be treated.
The Two Legal Questions
Under the ADA, staff may only ask:
- "Is this a service animal required because of a disability?" — Answer: "Yes."
- "What task has the dog been trained to perform?" — Give a specific task
You do not have to disclose your disability, show documentation, or demonstrate tasks.
Public Interactions
When People Want to Pet Your Dog
You have every right to say no. "Thank you for asking, but she's working right now."
Invasive Questions
"I'd prefer not to discuss my medical condition, but my dog is a trained service animal."
Children
"This dog is working right now — kind of like a doctor, so we can't pet her."
